Windy Chien at the Hotel San Luis Obispo
Author:Michelle KonstantinovskyBay Area artist Windy Chien describes herself as a lifelong “outsider” but her newest work is debuting this month in a modern urban resort designed for in-the-know insiders. Chien’s 24-foot-long Circuit Board (her longest yet) hangs in Piadina, one of Hotel San Luis Obispo’s two restaurants.
The hotel, filled with exclusive pieces curated by art consultant Svea Lin Soll, is a bright and airy coastal escape situated between the sea and mountains. As for Piadina, the restaurant features Executive Chef Ryan Fancher’s casual farm-fresh fare based around the wood-fired oven, now complemented by Chien’s expansive Sunbrella rope, walnut, and leather piece.
After owning Aquarius Records, an independent San Francisco record shop, for 14 years, Chien spent years in the corporate world at Apple, eventually channeling her passion for art, design, and tech into her own unique creative work. Her specialty? Knots. Case in point: her 2016 work, The Year Of Knots, in which she learned a new knot every day for a year. See one of Chien’s most iconic pieces to date by paying a visit to Piadina at Hotel San Luis Obispo this fall.
Hotel San Luis Obispo is located at 877 Palm Street, San Luis Obispo, CA 93401.
