Old Hollywood Magic At The El Cabrillo, $775K
Author:Philip Ferrato
Built by the legendary Hollywood mogul Cecil B. DeMille in 1928, the El Cabrillo apartment complex at the foot of historic Whitley Heights has all the atmosphere of a movie set. Designed by Nina and Arthur Zweibel, masters of the 1920’s most elegant Spanish Revival courtyard projects, the El Cabrillo served DeMille as both an investment and as a pied-a-terre for East Coast actors at the beginning of talking pictures. It is uniquely the only project by the Zweibels built with concrete blocks formed to mimic adobe, but their signature format remains the same– compact 2-story units arranged around an elegant courtyard ornamented with wrought iron and tile details. With the exception of a charming renovated kitchen and bath, the original details remain.
