When hired to convert a date seaside beach condo into a modern retreat, Jaqui Seerman and her team knew some tough waves lie ahead. “Our client purchased the space from its previous owner, who had left it virtually untouched since its construction in the late 1960s,” says Seerman. “They were drawn to it for its oceanfront views, beach access, and proximity to local restaurants and shops.”

Nestled on the coast of Carbon Beach in Malibu, the 2-bedroom, 2-bathroom, 1,200-square foot condo was the perfect place to retreat from the family’s busy L.A. life. “The goal was to create a light, bright space with a modern beach aesthetic, making it a refreshing coastal getaway from their more traditional city residence,” she recalls. “The original space had a very small kitchen hidden behind a wall with a door. The only natural light came from a tiny peekaboo window above the sink. This setup spurred the renovation, aiming to create an open space suitable for entertaining, dining, and relaxing while enjoying the spectacular oceanfront views.”

One of the client’s main requests was a beautiful, seamless stone islands in the new kitchen. “Transporting the slab into the space was even more difficult, requiring multiple teams to move it through the subterranean garage, up vertical staircases to the residence, and through the condo itself before installation,” she says. The teams took several precautions to ensure they could safely deliver their client’s dream design. “The results were worth every effort,” Seerman proclaims.

What they did not predict is how challenging it would be to renovate the primary bathroom. “Originally a narrow single-sink bathroom with a tiled shower, we completely reimagined the space,” she notes. “We installed a spacious double vanity with wall-mounted fixtures to maximize floor space, and clad the room in grey marble wainscoting to create the illusion of a wider area. Additionally, we designed a custom metal shelving unit above the toilet to hold towels and bath items enhancing the modern airy feel.”

When the project was completed, it truly felt like an entirely new home. “Despite its small footprint, the space now feels incredibly spacious, with abundant light and panoramic views from the moment you arrive,” Seerman boasts. “Everyone is elated with the final renovation.”
