For transplants from the East Coast, with its intimate spaces often dense with architectural details, colder, quixotic weather and formal style, it can take a moment to settle into the West Coast’s laidback lifestyle and clean-lined interiors. “The architecture of the home marked a bold departure for them,” notes Kendra Nash of Nash Design Group. “While the clean line, warm woods and contrasting details provided a perfect blank canvas, we were determined to infuse their personal style into the space.”

It had several years for the clients to discover a home that felt comfortable. “It was unlike anything they had typically been drawn to, both in terms of architectural style and its smaller scale,” Nash remembers. “But as soon as they stepped inside, they exchanged a look and instantly agree that it was exactly what they’d been searching for.” They called on Nash to help them create a space that felt both fresh and familiar.

Nash, who founded Nash Design Group in 2011 after cutting her teeth on the Silicon Valley real estate market and grew up in Atherton, is a proponent of the subtle juxtapositions—of spare, modern elements with organic, natural details, masculine lines with feminine curves—that add up to homes with a sense of ease.

Nash began by thoughtfully selecting the best pieces from the clients inventory, reupholstering cherished designs and mixing in favorite artworks. “We blended new elements and beloved heirlooms which ultimately brought them joy and reflected their personalities and their history.”

She points to the bar area as an area she’s particularly proud of. “It’s a small space but one with undeniable impact,” she says. Nestled into a cozy nook under the floating stairs, it offers seamless access to the dining room and the exterior patio, making it the ideal nexus for the clients’ frequent entertaining. “The blend of the rich inky paint of the cabinetry and the striking jewelry of the hardware by Nest Studio adds a touch of sophistication that elevates the entire space.”

The clients were thrilled with the result. “What made them the happiest was that the space genuinely felt like home to them—something they were unsure about at the start of the project,” Nash shares. “By listening closely to their needs, we were able to delivery a space that really resonated with them.” Turning apprehension into joy, she turned a house into a home.
