Nestled in the foothills of Indian Canyon in Rancho Mirage, sits a second home for longtime clients of L.A. and Chicago-based Studio Gild. “The client wanted their desert home to embody a laid-back California vibe while still maintaining a sense of modernism,” says designer and founder Jennie Bishop on the overall design direction of the project.

The team started by imposing a soft, white and natural-hued palette in the main living spaces that maintain a light feeling throughout, while pops of color and print add the expected desert flare. “Warm, wood planks cover the vaulted ceilings in the majority of the space–a nod to 1970s design, but with modern-day execution,” says Bishop.

Beginning in the kitchen, terrazzo countertops and modern flat-front cabinetry pay homage to the region’s love of mid-century design while a vibrant magenta, custom hood adds warmth. A nearby powder room, echoes the statement in the kitchen with the placement of the La Palma wallpaper by Mokum, available at Holly Hunt and soft pink trim.

The family room, which serves as an extension to the expansive outdoor living space, offers a place for repose with an inviting velvet sectional, warm leather arm chair and soft woven rug. “The decorative pillows infuse bold color and graphic pattern into an otherwise muted palette,” says Bishop.

The team extended the finishes and architectural details from the main areas into each bedroom, continuing the mid-century made modern vibes, while soft textures found in Moroccan throws and shag carpets nod to the 1970s style often found in the desert while modern art and accessories provide balance. In the bathrooms, vibrant floor tiles and lighting complement the modern faucets.
