2021 Design Awards: Powder Room Design by Chad Dorsey Design
Author:Lindsey ShookThe pandemic did not stop the 43rd annual San Francisco Decorator Showcase from opening its doors—albeit virtually—to reveal an abundance of style. The 2020 class of over 20 designers pushed creative boundaries through the use of color, materials, art and lighting, including L.A.-and Dallas-based Chad Dorsey. His calm and peaceful retreat, dubbed “the Listening Room,” featured mesmerizing red walls, a playful ceiling by Porter Teleo, a robust art collection and Dorsey’s own design from the Strike collection—the Sausalito fireplace in Menorca marble.
However, the designer took his story a step further with the curation of an adjacent jewel box powder room that showcased his ability to transform spaces with materials. He started by lining the walls with Hazelford by Cambria, cut into eight-inch-wide by nine-feet-tall pieces and beveled at the edge to mimic paneling against the light Breccia Marble flooring. “I wanted the space to feel moody and wanted all of the surfaces to be the same and give the illusion of height, but it needed to be a material that could also be incorporated in the shower,” says Dorsey. A panel of fluted shower glass from Bendheim adds another sculptural element, while a custom Breccia Fiore marble vanity from Materials Marketing, cut to have fluted edges, continues the detail from the Listening Room fireplace. Dorsey playfully placed three of the Tangier sconces designed by Fuse Lighting, which add the perfect glow to the small space.
