Music Muse

Nestled in the heart of NoMad sits The Evelyn, one of New York City’s most charming and approachable hotels, which was transformed in honor of the original influencer, Evelyn Nesbit. Model, entertainer and wife of a railroad scion, Nesbit was known throughout Manhattan during the early 1900s for her beauty and modern way of living. “Much of her success unfolded in what is today considered NoMad,” says Brett Blass, COO of Triumph Hotels. “The area was her stomping ground and the building housing the Evelyn Hotel was built shortly after she moved to the city, so it made sense to marry the two and continue celebrating Evelyn’s legacy and influence.”
Originally built in 1903, the Beaux Arts-style building was designed by William H. Birkmire during a time when the neighborhood was known as Tin Pan Alley because it was home to the jazz music industry of the time.
Owned and operated by Triumph Hotels, whose mission is to transform historic properties into boutique hotels throughout New York City, The Evelyn features 159 rooms, an expansive lobby, a café, a gym and restaurant, Brass. “We thoughtfully renovated the hotel’s public spaces, rooms and suites to include musically inspired accents and vintage furnishings,” says Blass. “All our hotels are locally rooted, so we carefully renovate with respect and appreciation for each neighborhood and its origins, preserving [the building’s] old- world charm and authentic New York spirit.”
The sophisticated, soulful aesthetic begins in the lobby, which is adorned with rich woods, mid-century brass and leather details and impressive art deco-inspired stained glass. Just a few steps away, the restaurant is full of moody jewel tones and dim lighting that transports you to the early jazz era that inspired the overall design. “Brass is a high-design, nontraditional brasserie paying homage to the grand dining rooms of jazz-era New York City,” he notes. “Guests can enjoy a fresh take on a French-leaning menu, carefully made classic cocktails with creative flourishes and an extensive wine list packed with gems.”
The nostalgic charm continues in the guest suites, which feature vintage, musically inspired accessories and art, while modern enhancements including heated bathroom floors and Frette linens offer maximum comfort. Anchored in one of the city’s cultural hubs and inspired by one of the most artistic periods of time, The Evelyn is the perfect place to rest your head if you need a central location that is saturated with history and style.
