Booking a hotel in San Francisco can conjure up Goldilocks’ experience at the home of the three bears: this one’s beautiful but inconvenient; this one’s right in the center of everything but spartan. 1 Hotel San Francisco manages to make the decision easy, conquering the markers of style, service and setting that underline a great stay while adding a fourth—sustainability—to the mix. Upholding the vision of the worldwide brand (there are 10 properties in North America alone, and more opening soon), the result is a hotel designed to make you feel good not only during your vacation but even after your trip is complete.

The hotel’s front desk

Located on the Embarcadero, just across the street from the bustling and vibrant Ferry Building (its cornucopia of restaurants and shops include Hog Island Oyster and an outpost of Heath Ceramics) and the Transbay Terminal, the hotel embraces invigorating views of the Bay and the city’s unmistakable skyline. Many of the city’s iconic destinations—The SoMa district, The San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, Chinatown, North Beach, and Oracle Park—are easily accessible.

The hotel’s focus on sustainability starts with its design. Envisioned in collaboration with interior designer Nicole Hollis, it uses reclaimed wood (the lumber for the lobby floor is created from salvaged barn wood while the redwood beams that adorns the elevator landing and corridors were sourced from The Old San Francisco Bay Bridge), native greenery, exposed brick, warm terracotta accents and stone in strong shapes and soothing colors. Plump and inviting couches, oversized chairs and sturdy wood tables in neutral colors and natural fabrics telegraph tranquility while nodding to the city’s past and stunning surroundings.

A guest room showcases the neutral tones and natural materials including a wool throw, a leather headboard against a collage of reclaimed wood and sustainably sourced linens atop plush pillow-topped mattresses.

Beyond its surface beauty, every aspect of the hotel—from the water filling stations on each floor to the 80% recycled content of the ECOmax rubber flooring in the fitness center to the hand-made Zellige tiles, its dual-pane windows and heat-reflective roofing, its hand-loomed plant fiber and wool rugs, designed by textile artist Karen Flitterman—was created, sourced and conceived with the 1 Hotels’ commitment to reducing waste and energy consumption and achieving carbon neutrality.

Bamford Wellness Spa’s rooftop treatment baths

The hotel’s dedication to inner and outer wellness is confirmed by its amenities. There’s the luxurious full-service Bamford Wellness Spa, which features an array of integrative wellness programs. The Field House fitness center incorporates rooftop classes in partnership with Love Story Yoga  and LuxFit SF. The menu of its indoor-outdoor restaurant, Terrene, with its green ceiling of preserved plants, is rooted in local and sustainably-sourced ingredients (including herbs and produce plucked from the rooftop chef’s garden and a beehive that provides its luscious honey) and includes beer and wines from organic breweries and wineries within a fifty mile radius. There are complimentary e-bikes, house cars
