Situated at a corner of historic Sonoma Plaza, the two-story structure that dates to 1843 has had many lives—including as a private residence, church, literary college and wine-making facility. Since as far back as the 1940s, it has housed the El Dorado Hotel. Following a renovation of its 27 guest rooms, the boutique hotel reemerged this spring as a top spot to stay in this charming Wine Country town. “We were inspired to layer a modern classic look and feel with contemporary touches,” says interior designer Nadine Curtis of Palisades Hospitality. “We wanted to emphasize the regal character of the historic building; maintain an intimate and comfortable feel; and add in unique, fresh, noteworthy details.”

Vintage Persian-style runners warm up the corridors that lead to the guest rooms. Setting foot inside, patterned accent walls—featuring Farrow & Ball’s Lotus or Mitchell Black’s Sade or Clouds—instantly captivate. “The wallpaper choices are full of character that reflect that modern classic vibe,” Curtis elaborates. “Each room features a different wallpaper design and color along with unique still-life paintings by Maggie Kleinpeter and vintage throw rugs to add that level of curated, character-driven detail.”

Among the room amenities are organic custom bath products, plush Matouk robes and an honor bar showcasing Sonoma-made treats. (The chocolate-covered figs delivered to the rooms in the evening nod to the 125-year-old fig tree in the courtyard.) For those looking for a group getaway, consider booking the four Patio Deluxe King Rooms: Situated behind a fence near the solar-heated saltwater pool, they offer privacy as well as a shared outdoor seating area. And two of the Plaza Deluxe King Rooms boast generously sized balconies that overlook the Plaza.

In addition to all-day restaurant El Dorado Kitchen, there are several private dining rooms on-site. The Cantina, which operates from a window on the Spain Street side of the building, also handles poolside food and drinks service. While the hotel does offer complimentary bike rentals, its superb location on the Plaza means you’re well placed to explore myriad shops, galleries, restaurants and tasting rooms.
