Author:Abigail StoneWhen it comes to dinnerware, what you eat off of can be almost as important to the enjoyment of a meal as what you eat. Presented on a beautiful plate, suddenly even something as familiar as a piece of toast becomes magical. The same holds true for vases, a plant pot or a coffee cup.
That ethereal quality is especially applicable when it comes to pieces from Mud Australia. The Sydney Australia based company, founded in 1994 by Shelley Simpson who is also the company’s designer, specializes in handmade porcelain home goods with a simple, minimalist aesthetic in a rainbow of soft colors.
Distinguished by their shiny, glazed interiors and matte exteriors, which become softer with use, the delicacy of the pieces belies their durability and their versaility. Designed for everyday use, each piece is microwave, oven and dishwasher-safe.
Created in the company’s studio in Syndney, each piece is made by hand using porcelain clay sourced directly from Limoges, France. The pigment is integrated at the slip stage, providing an extraordinary colour depth. Then, clear glaze is applied to the interior of each piece leaving the exterior with a vitrified stone-like surface.
