San Francisco’s foggy climate is loved by many, however, if not balanced by brighter decor it can feel persistently dark. When hired to maximized space and enhance joy inside the kitchen of a home located in San Francisco’s Sunset neighborhood, Melanie Love—founder of Love and Interiors—knew color needed to play a major role. “We chose a cheerful mix of pink and orange hues, echoing their stunning sunsets, complemented by a verdant green, evoking the city’s abundant parks and greenery,” says Love.”

Love and her team previously completed an overhaul of the bathroom and a few other spaces inside the 1,600-square-foot house, so it was smooth sailing when working with the clients. They knew they needed more storage and craved a brighter, more vibrant design. “They wanted to avoid any major structural changes so the challenge was to streamline and maximize the kitchen and dining space without modifying any existing walls. Previously, a peninsula segmented the kitchen from the dining area,” says Love.

They started by rethinking the layout by removing an awkward island extension that divided the space. The line of cabinets was then extended to create a connection for the dining area to the kitchen while adding to the storage. This allowed for a generously sized pantry, perfect for organizing everything from baking ingredients to after-school snacks,” she says. “With the addition of the island, our client gains even more storage space as well as a dedicated prep area for their passion for bread making.”

The final result is a super playful modern kitchen with checkerboard floors, jade green cabinets and warm tiles. “It really is the heart of the family’s home. It’s where they start and end their days,” says Love. “The client is delighted by its unique and inventive design, which offers both originality and practicality for cooking and baking.”
