Counsel Design Group embraces traditional design, drawing inspiration from timeless aesthetics and classic craftsmanship as a foundation upon to explore new horizons and ideas. “We believe in the power of heritage, simplicity, and elegance to create designs that stand the test of time,” says Patrick Maziarski, the firm’s partner and principal designer. “Honoring traditional design, we lay a strong foundation on which to explore innovative and  boundary-pushing ideas.” Working closely with their clients, they strive to create spaces that not only meet their clients’ requirements but also inspire them to see their environment in fresh and exciting ways. Their approach combines the comfort of the known with the thrill of the new, resulting in designs that are both tailored and transformative.

In the case of this Glassel Park home, the starting point was a modest 1200 square foot structure built in 1955, brought to their attention by real estate agent Katie Crain of Crain + Podhor whose clients had recently moved to LA from Portland Oregon. “It lacked any defining defining architectural style, blending into its surroundings as a nondescript residence,” says Maziarski of his first impression of the home. “We saw this unassuming canvas as an opportunity for creative reinvention.”

The clients’ overarching goal was to create a space that exuded the sophistication of 60s era design and encouraged entertaining. They gave the firm carte blanche with a few caveats. They were interested in efficiency and openness. They wanted to maximize natural light and improve the home’s flow. “We honed in on the changes that would bring this feeling to life,” says Maziarski. With the help of All Shapes Construction, walls were removed, a full-lite entry door was installed, the path from the front of the house to the back garden was streamlined, and a narrow back room was reimagined, with the help of a custom piano-shaped daybed, as a cozy den.

“Through a careful balance of rich textures, dark hues, and noteworthy elements, we were able to create a space that captures the essence of their vision while infusing it with a unique personality and style,” Maziarski shares. A richly toned oak weaves warmth and elegance through the home. Used throughout, from the dramatic slatted entry wall to the streamlined cabinetry in the kitchen, the custom dresser and the upholstered headboard in the primary bedroom, it ties these spaces together, exuding a sophistication and craftsmanship.

“Despite some initial apprehension surrounding the installation of the rich wood, their reaction to the finished project was nothing short of sheer joy and elation,” says Maziarski. “Any doubts were quickly replaced by a sense of awe and delight as their initial reservations gave way to a deep appreciation for how the rich materials added a layer of sophistication and charm to each room, ultimately culminating in a home that exceeded their expectations.”

“By reimagining the space with a fresh perspective, we were able to elevate the home from its origins to a place of unique character and charm,” says Maziarski. “Once an underwhelming dwelling, it’s now been transformed into a distinctive and stylish sanctuary, a testament the transformative power of thoughtful design.”
