Upon finding The Workroom Interiors designs on Instagram, a couple who had just finished remodeling their Northern California home for their family of four, knew they had discovered a creative partner who could infuse their personality into the home. Led by the firm’s principal designer, Stephanie Thill, their mission was to finalize the design and optimize space planning. “We like to make sure a space represents who our clients are and how they live,” says Thill. “This space was a combination of items well loved by the client and our intuition of what the space needed. Our approach begins with a thorough interview with the client to understand their lifestyle and personal style preferences.”
The active family of four needed each room to feel clean, organized and durable. They requested an overall design direction that felt special yet minimal with moments of prints and patterns, and a connected kitchen and family room layout that felt flexible. “We had to space plan to optimize the existing square footage,” she recalls. “The oversized fireplace mantel dominated the room, prompting a redesign as well. We suggested sealing one kitchen window to increase storage space and installing a sliding window near the sink to facilitate serving in the outdoor entertainment area. This gave an al fresco dining feel which made the kitchen area feel more expansive.”
The team took the directive to curate calming energy throughout while making each space feel unique. “We love with how the living room turned out because it feels like a jewel box of a room,” Thill says. “The home is so family friendly yet this space feels elevated and like a really special moment to listen to a vinyl or have a cocktail with friends, a moment for mom and dad!”
They achieved this feel by adding drapes over layered woven shades on top of of all the windows which enhanced the warmth and drama. “We infused multiple textures—velvet, boucle, rattan, wool and linen to achieve a layered look,” she notes. “Despite the room’s modest size, the furniture was scaled perfectly, providing ample seating. Collaborating with Evie Simon Art Advisory, we placed art that brought creativity and soul to the space.”
“The space now feels like it tells the story of the family, with the result being an open, inviting and serene space that combined with comfort and style,” says Thill. The clients were very involved with the transformation and so pleased with every detail that they couldn’t wait to move back in. A job well done.
