2022 Art Week Best in Show—Design Edition

As usual, the annual Art Week in Miami delivered bountiful inspiration for the art and design world. From the endless walls covered in iconic and emerging art to the dynamic discussions and celebrity sightings, all of our senses were activated. And while we couldn’t see it all, we did spend time at our favorite design shows and showrooms. Here, we share a selection of design moments that had everyone talking.

DESIGN MIAMI

By far our favorite presentation of the week—Design Miami presented an x curation of furniture, lighting, accessories and decorative arts ideal for the avid collector. Here are a handful of artists that captured our eye.

Mark Grattan at Cristina Grajales Gallery

Known for his future-forward, sophisticated pieces that pull inspiration from Art Deco, Japanese and Mexican influences, Mark Grattan presented an exclusive collection of furniture at Cristina Grajales Gallery that continues his signature style but wrapped in chrome and a lavendar Dedar textiles.

Roberto Lugo’s Village Potter pop-up with R & Company

R & Company partnered with artist, activist and poet Roberto Lugo to create a physical translation of his digital platform, The Village Potter. The bodega inside Design Miami showcased his collection of functional objects that reinforce the idea that art and design are for everyone. Among the items included are small cups, train car-styled butter dishes and water tower coffee pour-overs.

Gulla Jonsdoittir at Wexlery Gallery

L.A Architect Gulla Jonsdottir represented California in a strong manner with the introduction of a second collection, presented by Wexler Gallery. Thee three-piece collection including the Crater sofa, Crater table and Gaia mirror, celebrates her unique architectural perspective.

Tuleste Factory presents Through and Through

New York gallery Tuleste Factory presented Through and Through, an exploration of blue hues through textures and materials. The color coated collaboration between the gallery’s artists including Facture by Quincy Ellis, Ian Alistair Cochran, Jt. Pfeiffer and Yonathan Moore, was cohesive and innovative.

Light on Water by Aqua Creations

Iconic lighting brand Aqua Creations illuminated Design Miami with Light on Water, an exhibit that shines a light on the dire state of freshwater lakes around the world by drawing inspiration from the shapes of Lake Doiran and Lake Chad. The ambient glow created by their signature multicolored silk shades created an emotive, sculptural energy.

Reflecting Women by Emma Scully

Manhattan-based gallerist Emma Scully presented an all-female curio entitled Reflecting Women, a comprehensive selection of work empowered by the female spirit featuring works from Bec Brittain, Simone Bodmer-Turner, Rooms Studio, Jane Atfield, Ibiyanε, Jaye Kim, Kaja Upelj, Nel Verbeke, and Jenny Min.

ADDITIONAL NOTABLE DESIGN MOMENTS

Vladimir Kagan Design Group at Holly Hunt

Design icon Holly Hunt opened the Miami showroom the present six new designs to its iconic Vladimir Kagan portfolio, designed by Chris Eitel—Kagan’s long-time apprentice and protégé. Each piece embraces Kagan’s renowned style while introducing new concepts that fit seamlessly with the existing portfolio.

Holly Hunt also debuted new pieces exclusive to the Miami showroom from other artisans Hino Design Studio. Their debut collection of tables and vessels are handmade in South Africa.

Luxury Living Group Presents Dolce&Gabbana Casa

Luxury Living Group opened their three-story destination store front located inside the heart of Miami’s Design District to showcase their new partner Dolce&Gabanna Casa’s dynamic collection of upholstered furniture and coffee tables, rugs and lamps, bar furniture and cabinets, dining tables and seats, accessories and decorative objects. The Miami debut features a preview presentation of two new worlds in the Collection: DG Logo and Oro 24k. These new themes join the four already existing ones: Carretto Siciliano, Blu Mediterraneo, Leopardo and Zebra.
