Steven Shortridge Masterpiece in Venice, $4.75M
Author:Philip Ferrato
Before his untimely death in 2014 at age 52, Steven Shortridge was one LA’s most interesting and sought-after architects. Lauded as one of his masterworks, this 2005 project (designed with his architecture partner Barbara Callas in Callas Shortridge Architects) and dubbed 543 House, it’s sited on a tight 30×80-foot lot, where the architects deftly inserting a series of staggered levels and elegantly composed planes of teak and Venetian plaster, acid-washed concrete floors and bands of windows.
Originally designed for producer John Melfi (Sex and the City, Nurse Jackie) it’s an opportunity to own a work of architecture unmediated by other owners.
What We Love: It’s a collection of beautifully organized and detailed spaces, in homage to Mid-Century LA masters like Richard Neutra and Rafael Soriano, using materials and technology they could only have dreamed of. It’s also a deeply intuitive work; Shortridge lived across the street during the construction to give it his undivided attention.
Below, the primary bedroom suite follows the same uniform palette of materials.

In a town famed for its roof terraces, Shortridge created one of Venice’s most sublime outdoor spaces.
