Heavenly Bolinas Compound, $9.8M

Author:

Bolinas is best described as a fiercely guarded bit of Earthly Paradise, moderately hostile to daytrippers (except surfers) and devoted to fending off development, and although the drive up the coast from San Francisco is sublime, it’s not especially easy to get to. Or find. But the town has a long history (well, since the 70’s) of environmental caution and concern, hand-in-hand with organic agriculture and low-impact living, and these attitudes have maintained Bolinas’ identity as a kind of handhewn, coastal Brigadoon set among coastal oaks and surrounded by water on three sides.

The homes of Bolinas reflect that attitude, and here we have an unparalleled retreat designed by artist/architect Bruce Tomb and constructed in 2010 by Matarozzi Pelsinger, crafted both from salvage redwood and Giant Chinquapin (a non-commercial variety of beech harvested and milled specifically for this project in Northern California) seasoned onsite for nearly a year to achieve its silvery grey color.

With almost 8 acres, four structures- the main house, plus a trio of guest houses– occupy a meadow perched high above the Bolinas Lagoon. The central open space of the barn-like main house connects to the outdoors through sliding glass walls.

What We Love: Without any sense of irony, there’s a vibe that conjures up caftans and wind chimes. Below, the view from the principal bedroom.

Of the three guest structures, one is fully equipped, with a kitchen and 1.5-baths, plus a sleeping loft.

The other two guest accommodations are a little simpler but no less enchanting.
