A Nod to Tradition

“The history of the neighborhood where the project is located, Hancock Park, and the incredible original architecture of the home,” says designer Joyce Downing Pickens of JDP Interiors. “But it was important to modernize it for the young family who lives there.”
The young family desired a more modern feel that still fit within the traditional mold of the home. “When my clients purchased the house, the floors in the dining room and hearth in the living room were a previously added modern two-toned geometric tile that felt so wrong in this soft historic home,” says Pickens. “So, the first thing we did was remove them and replace them with a beautiful limestone floor in a Versailles pattern. The immediate difference was astounding and created a much softer, elevated, and timeless look and feel.”
JDP completed the project in just four months, with a focus on scale to give the wow factor. “This house practically ate furniture and accessories and needed more than was expected,” she says. “The long skinny living room was a challenge when you took this scale issue into account so more is more in this case! Larger scale items are key to preventing the space from feeling cluttered and messy.”
