Mid-Century Gem In Poppy Peak, $1.55M

As a longtime associate and project architect in the office of Richard Neutra, Gloria Jean Killion was an active participant the renowned Austrian’s many groundbreaking residential projects. Now, the house she designed for herself in 1954 in Pasadena’s Poppy Peak District has been thoughtfully rehabilitated by LA photographer and architectural property renovator Andreas E.G. Larsson of Hab House.

What We Love: This is a superbly restrained restoration, retaining the rough original finishes and Killion’s fresh sense of experimentation. Larsson refrained form painting the original clear heart redwood used throughout, or replacing the flat terracotta brick pavers that Killion used throughout.

Along with Akari light sculptures, Larsson furnished the project with furniture made specifically for the house from recently-deceased Enzo Mari’s Autoprogettazione designs- a 1970’s attempt by the Italian artist and designer to democratize furniture by providing plans for people to make their own from simple pine planks. The kitchen is sympathetic but new, a collaboration with Niel Rasmussen of Estuary Home.
