It’s fair to say that Herbert Burns’ iconic Gilman Residence in Palm Springs is a complete reinvention of the 1948 original. Located in the desirable Little Tuscany neighborhood, it had been partially gutted when it came on the market two years ago and sold as a teardown. Enter Jackie Thomas and DeAnn McCoy of Thomboy Properties, specialists in Desert Modern Style restorations who could see past the wreckage to realize Burns’ original could be brought back to life. What they’ve done is to create a completely new house within the Burns bones, with no surface or system left untouched.

Herbert W. Burns was a Palm Springs designer/developer with both exceptional taste and a deep understanding of how Modernism applies in the desert. He began working in Palm Springs after WWII, building more than a dozen private residences and multi-family projects and chic, intimate resorts like The Hideaway, all of them employing sweeping horizontals and deep overhangs with walls of slender Santa Fe bricks that extend inside.

What We Love: While the house is crisp and fresh, the details and materials convey a warm sense of shelter in the desert. Below, the sleekly minimalist teak kitchen– using appliances Burns could only have dreamed of.
