On The Block: Block Shop Opens Its First Store
Author:Abigail StoneJust in time for holiday shopping, Block Shop opens their first retail location within their studio in Atwater Village
Lily and Hopie Stockman’s wood block prints have wheedled their way into the coolest homes ever since the sisters started selling them. Beginning with scarves, Block Shop has now branched out into pillows, baby quilts, table linens, dhurrie flat-weave cotton rugs, robes, prints and note cards (we like to frame the set of six and then give them as gifts; one box will yield two sets of three each). Saturday, November 30th aka Small Business Saturday, the duo will be opening their first retail location, inside their studio in Atwater Village and it’s just as compelling and colorful as their textiles.
“We’ve put a lot of love, sweat and occasional tears into decorating and building out our new studio,” says Hopie. “We call our showroom + store, ‘the family room’. And it does feel like a family room in the sense that it includes work from this vibrant, extremely supportive family of designers who we love here in L.A.”
Located within their studio in Atwater Village, the bright space, washed in Farrow & Ball’s Cooking Apple Green, features custom furniture by Shin Okuda of Waka Waka, a chandelier by Brendan Ravenhill, a table lamp by Entler and a mirror by Kalon Studios. There are also pieces from Bari Ziperstein of B.Zippy, Joshua Tree sculpor Dan John Anderson; Simon St. James; and furniture designed by Small office. “Basically all our friends here in L.A.,” Hopie laughs, “There’s also a portrait by me! It reflects our overall approach to space, not just textiles.
“The dream with our new studio was always to open the front room up as a proper shop,” she shares, “so we can share our world with our beloved customers, just in time for holiday shopping!” Along with their other merchandise, they’ll be featuring their latest collection of colorful scarves modeled on the floral designs of Maurice Harris of Bloom & Plume. Two designs, Duet and Sunset Point, are based off of the collaboration that they did with Oribe.
