How did you get your start in design?
I was always trying things out, design-wise, in my own home — I loved searching local flea markets or garage sales, hunting for vintage treasures — it was just always something I loved to do! My friends that would come over to my house would ask me for help with their own homes, and just one thing led to another, word of mouth around town, and all of the sudden I was designing client’s homes!
What’s your process for getting to know new clients?
I love getting to know my clients, learning about the way they live- the things they love- their hobbies etc. I always try to incorporate their hobbies and travels into their design — it is really the most important thing! A beautiful home is just that — it needs to have a soul; who lives there, what are they about. I love to incorporate my clients personalities to really show in their home!
What inspired you to start sKout and what do you consider unique and different about your firm?
I originally started out just making pillows and some custom furniture! My love for textiles sort of forced me into making pillows, but then it turned into so much more! I think our firm is different in that we try to add some uniqueness and some funk into every project! We are not in the business of “model homes” — we like to add something vintage, something found, or just something a little bit different to every single project! And like I said above, all of our homes show off the individual client’s/families’ interests, passions and travels — so no two are ever the same.
Who are your biggest professional role models and why?
I am not sure about professional role model, but I really love Emily Henderson — I love how she takes risks and tries new things. She is really authentic and makes mistakes. I enjoy following her on social media, and look up to other women that support each other — who are honest and real.
What’s your biggest source of inspiration?
Definitely nature and travel!
Describe your perfect Sunday from a.m. to p.m.
An ideal Sunday morning would be going to the local flea market, then breakfast or brunch (out) with my family (I have four kids!), then afternoon at the beach, and Mexican food for dinner—followed by movie night on the couch with my kids!
