10 Ways To Rev Up Your Holiday Spirit in November

While it’s still almost a month away, you might want to circle December 1st on your calendar. It’s Museum Store Sunday, celebrated at 1,100 museums around the world. Showcasing a range of carefully selected, unique, and experience-specific gifts from books, jewelry, children’s products, home accessories, and gourmet food, you’ll sure to find something for even the pickiest person on your list, while also supporting your favorite museum. In California, the participating museum gift shops include, in Los Angeles: Skirball Cultural Center, the J. Paul Getty Museums, The Broad, MOCA, LACMA, the Craft & Folk Art Museum, Pasadena’s Norton Simon Museum, the Gamble House and the Kidspace Children’s Museum and, in San Francisco, the Museum of Modern Art, the de Young Museum, the Legion of Honor, the Contemporary Art Museum and the Asian Art Museum. Garde, on Beverly Boulevard (they also have a innovative store/ AirBnB space in Summerland, just outside Santa Barbara), presents the first US exhibition of acclaimed Belgian designer Arno Declercq in their newly expanded shop. Opening November 7th and on view through January 20, 2020, the light-filled space, founded by Scotti Sitz and partner John Davidson in 2012 to introduce innovative home designs and originally located just a few doors west, is the ideal venue in which to appreciate the sculptural quaility of Declercq’s work.
Lawson Fenning, another favorite Los Angeles design store, corrals pieces from a few of their artists in a exhibition at the front of the store. Running through November 12 and entitled “The New Organic,” it pulls together a selection of their stable of talented artists, including Jack Rabbit Studio, Entler, Lland and Abel Macias, who forge natural materials into compelling and sensual shapes.
“Loitering is delightful”, which runs thru Jan 12 at Los Angeles Municipal Art Gallery at Barnsdall Park. brings together 10 LA artists, including Cauleen Smith, Lani Trock, Megan Whitmarsh and David Horvitz, to explore the joyful possibilities of slowing down. Loitering and its brethren — hanging out, daydreaming, dawdling, wandering — traditionally considered the preserve of delinquents, teenagers, and miscreants, feels increasingly necessary in our fast-paced digital age. This show reflects on public space and who is entitled to occupy it. Seating, objects, videos and spaces are designed for contemplation and exploration, inviting visitors to enjoy a few stolen moments from their busy day.

Video artist Christopher Marclay, whose The Clock fused together time-centric scenes from the history of cinema into a dizzying twenty-four house experience, is back with a new project. https://www.lacma.org/art/exhibition/christian-marclay-sound-stories. Using Snapchat videos as raw material, he draws on the sounds and images of everyday life found on the multimedia messaging app, creating five immersive audiovisual installations, two of which are interactive. Through November 11 at LACMA.
Holiday on ice in the balmy Los Angeles? Why not? After all, this is the city of dream and the Bai Holiday Ice Rink Pershing Square in downtown is the place to enjoy them. The skating rink returns for its 22nd season on November 14th and run through January 20, 2020. In addition to open skating sessions, there will be plenty of special events including curling lessons, a silent disco skate and, Thursdays beginning at 7 pm, DJ nights. Opening day includes special performances and entertainment beginning at 11 am.
Bring a little moonlight magic to your evenings with the Aboretum’s Moonlight Forest Magical lantern festival, open Wednesday through Sunday, from 5:30 pm to 10 pm starting November 9th and running through January 12th.
