Anyone who’s ever gone down an Instagram travel photo rabbit hole knows Costa Rica is one of the world’s most stunning destinations for nature lovers. With its new Extraordinary Experience offering, the Four Seasons Resort Costa Rica at Peninsula Papagayo is giving travelers the opportunity to explore the Central American rainforest up close.

Located within the 1,400-acre community of Peninsula Papagayothe, the 5-star FSRCR is located in northwest Costa Rica, overlooking two mind-blowing beaches. As of this year, the resort now offers the Conservation Land and Sea Extraordinary Experience to give guests a deeper understanding of the surrounding ecosystem and the continued need for protection and preservation.

The two-day adventure includes:

  • A day at sea, discovering the depths of The Golfo Dulce in the south Pacific. A private plane flies participants over sprawling views of tropical forests, Central America’s biggest mangrove canal system and volcanic formations dating back over 65 million years. Once guests arrive at Golfo Dulce, they may just see some of the local residents including sea turtles, humpback whales, and spotted dolphins. Marine Biologists and Conservationists Andrés Lopez and Ilena Zanella then take guests out on a yacht for a day of studying the habitat of hammerhead sharks, learning how these creatures are monitored through their nonprofit organization, Misión Tiburón. As a special memento, guests are invited to “adopt” and name their sharks, which means they’ll receive reports of its travels and growth over its lifespan. Available year around except for the months of September, October and November. Weather dependent. Price: $42,793 for 10 people max which includes a $3,500 donation to Misión Tiburón.
  • On day two, participants get to play a vital role in preserving the local butterfly population by collecting caterpillars and sampling the DNA of the area’s colorful butterflies. Led by Kyoto prize winner Dr. Daniel Janzen, known as the “Darwin of Conservation,” and his team of field-trained biodiversity specialists, the journey begins with a 35-minute scenic flight along Guanacaste’s wild volcanic mountain range with unobstructed views of the region’s tropical rainforest. Once the group touches down at Dr. Janzen’s lab in Quebrada Grande — home to one of the world’s largest collections of tropical butterflies — they’ll venture out and explore the forest. After a day of field work, guests are invited to dine with Dr. Janzen and then head back out into the great outdoors, exploring the landscape after dark on a trek deep into the forest to sample other rare butterfly species of the region. The evening continues as explorers meet other researchers and learn about their newly discovered species before returning to the Resort in by luxury SUV. Available year around. Weather dependent. Price $37,557 for 10 people max which includes a $10,000 donation to the Area de Conservacia Guanacaste.
