Let Her Art Open The Door: Gulla Jónsdóttir Atelier At La Peer Hotel

Master architect and designer Gulla Jónsdóttir is on a roll. The Icelandic-born Jónsdóttir, who majored in mathematics before moving to Los Angeles to study architecture at SCI-ARC, the Southern California Institute of Architecture, drenched herself in Southern California’s culture before starting her own firm, Gulla Jónsdóttir Architecture & Design in 2009, working for Richard Meire, Walt Disney Imagineering and Dodd Mitchell Design. Interiors, exteriors, graphic, products— Jónsdóttir’s designed them all. No surprise that La Peer Hotel, the luxury hospitality project in the heart of West Hollywood Design Distict, has been a sensation since the moment it flung open its doors. 

Now, she’s unveiled yet another creative outlet, opening Gulla Jónsdóttir Atelier at the La Peer Hotel. The art gallery, located off the hotel’s inviting first floor, will welcome a different artist each month as well as offer guests the opportunity to purchase pieces found throughout the property.  “It’s been inspiring to be able to come full circle and open a gallery in the space of my old studio.”

Opening with the work of Japanese graphic artist Kahori Maki, whose permanent art in La Peer Hotel graces the design of the custom elevators, the next few shows include: Mireya Samer, an Icelandic artist known for her fascination with art nature and water, opening October 25th; Dennis Morris, who’s best known for his photographs of Bob Marley and the Sex Pistols, will showcase photos of singer Marianna Faithful (who will also perform!), opening November 22; Alejandro Lopez, an artist-in-residence at the hotel who captured portraits of the inner workings and daily life of the hotel in charcoal drawing and sketches, opening December 13th; and, in 2019, Jónsdóttir’s BRASS collection of limited-edition art furniture, her collection of kaftans and scarves for Saga Kakala and, next summer, her new, 3D printed jewelry and accessory collection
