We are here as a powerful voice, declaring what California design is today. Like the most celebrated interior designers, artists and architects, we have our own distinct creative vision that inspires, informs and influences.

We are aware of the latest trends but aren't a slave to them. We live for beautiful design and know that it can originate from many places: the professional designer or architect, the inspired aesthete who expects beauty from the everyday or the passionate homeowner who believes, as we do, that the home is the ultimate outlet for personal expression, an escape from the madness, and a place to enjoy family and friends.

We believe that design is personal. Without the story of intention and the emotion of expression, design means nothing to us. To us, the people are what give the products meaning.

We are California. We are eco-conscious, we are innovative, we dismiss the boundary between indoors and out and the state is our stomping ground.

Erin Feher | Executive Editor
A native of Cleveland, Ohio, Erin covers architecture, design and the arts throughout California and is the author of the forthcoming book Houses of San Francisco. She lives in the Tenderloin with her husband and their many bicycles.

Sarah Virginia White | Associate Editor
Before moving to San Francisco in 2012, the Texas native lived past lives as a floral designer, waitress and Harvard-trained anthropological researcher. Fast forward to California Home+Design, where she writes about the best new products and also works with emerging and established designers for State of the Art features. Her work has been published in DeparturesUSA Today, Time Out Chicago and Chicago Home + Garden.

Mary Polizzotti | Digital Media Director
Mary runs the websites for 7x7 and California Home+Design. A Boston native, Mary traveled to 41 countries in between stints at the East Bay Express, Denver Westword, Lonely Planet, NileGuide.com, 10Best.com and a non-profit gig in Uganda. Thus, her design sense is, um, slightly eclectic and global. She hangs out in the Lower Haight when she is not wrangling freelancers.

Rachel Amy Shahvar  | Digital Marketing Director
Rachel studied Art History in college, and is excited to be back in the design world after previously working for a travel startup. An Oakland native, Rachel lived in San Diego and Budapest, Hungary before settling back in the Bay Area. She now lives happily in the Mission.

Hayley Besecker | Digital Sales & Media Coordinator
Having recently graduated from Cal Poly SLO with a B.S. in Graphic Communication, Hayley is only just beginning her journey in San Francisco. An East Bay native and small town girl at heart, she's excited to see what the big city has in store for her. She acquired a love for home design over the years as she witnessed her engineer dad transform her family's small ranch-style home in the Walnut Creek hills into a two-story masterpiece all on his own. From small beginnings as a little girl wallpapering her bedroom with magazine pages to now seeing her name in the California Home+Design masthead, Hayley is on her way to actualizing her dreams as CHD's Digital Sales and Media Coordinator.

Elysa Hill | Digital Content Manager
Originally from Los Angeles, Elysa followed her heart to San Francisco after earning her Bachelors in both English and Communication from the University of California, Davis. Her early creative achievements include inventing Dreyer’s Official Ice Cream of California’s Sesquicentennial and designing her own handbag line. Elysa has always had a passion for color and an eye for composition, so she is thrilled to be on California Home+Design’s online team. When she’s not playing kickball or singing karaoke, you can find her at many of the city’s art and music festivals, biking through Golden Gate Park, or writing song parodies in the local two-in-one coffee shops.

Kelly Stucker | Senior Account Manager
Kelly Stucker, a Midwesterner by heart, brings both agency and publishing experience to McEvoy Media. She worked at several top ad agencies before co-founding Trips magazine in 1997. She spends her free time entertaining her boys and remodeling their home.

Hondo Lateef Lewis | Director, New Media + Integrated Sales

A native Californian with a BIG Texas heart, Hondo has been in print and digital media, as well as the retail and ecommerce world for over two decades, and loves nothing more than assisting his clients in achieving their goals. From Account Executive to Sales Director to Ad Director (New Times Media, East Bay Express) to National Account Manager (7x7) to Group Publisher (Where San Francisco) to Brand Manager (Rue LaLa, Rue San Francisco) to President & CEO (Platinum Dirt), Hondo has worn many hats in his career.  He lives in Montclair, a district of Oakland, with his family, and spends his free time hanging out with his kids, playing basketball, and soccer, snowboarding, skating, cycling, singing, reading, interior designing, gardening and losing his voice at the Oakland Raiders' games—Go Raider Nation!

Timothy Wudarski | Production Director
Timothy Wudarski started his publishing career early, serving as Editor and Publisher of the critically acclaimed Monthly Comet in the third grade in Detroit. He went on to help the Detroit News and Free Press along their way to a pure digital workflow and serve as production manager at HOUR Detroit, working on several independent magazine ventures along the way. Tim moved to San Francisco to work for McEvoy Media in 2003, bringing to 7x7 another beloved mascot, a guinea pig named Jazz. He now also serves as Production/IT Director for Spin magazine.

Dana Baker | Production Designer
After spending six years living it up in the Pacific Northwest, Production Designer Dana Baker returned to her theoretically sunny California homeland. She has worked for Dog Nose News in Portland and the SF Bay Guardian. She lives in the Mission with her domestic partner (her cow-print cat Chi-Chi), where she spends most of her spare time redecorating with found objects and rejected paint colors from the corner store. She loves all things feline, healthy living and pondering the impact of social services and cacti.

Don Lewis | Digital Image Specialist
After wasting his youth on wine, women and song, Don Lewis began his career in various art departments in the Emerald City (Seattle, not Oz). Don further honed his skills freelancing at ad agencies here in San Francisco. Now at McEvoy Media, Don uses the magic of digital imagery to make people look even more beautiful and food even more delicious. Don is also the Production Department's resident movie and music know-it-all.

Todd Sotkiewicz | President
Delighting in the energy of boisterous business environments, Todd Sotkiewicz fits right in as the President of McEvoy Media. During his seven-year stint as the President/General Manager of Lonely Planet, Todd managed all operations with domestic and international sales in the United States, Canada and Latin America and worked to re-start and grow the business following 9/11. After diversifying and doubling the company's revenue base, Todd was a key leader in selling the business to the BBC in 2008. Earlier in his career, Todd served as the Vice President-Sales at Ebates and the Senior Vice President-Operations and Administration at Big Words. Working as the General Manager/Senior Vice President of Wired in the '90s, Todd worked closely with the magazine's founders, built financial and operational infrastructure and managed the customer acquisition team. A fitness enthusiast who regularly runs, bikes or swims at 5:30 AM, Todd is also a doting dad with an iPhone full of snapshots showcasing his son and daughter.

Openings

Editorial Interns for Print and Online

California Home+Design magazine seeks motivated students to work closely with our staff as editorial interns in our San Francisco office. Assist with research, fact checking, administrative tasks, generating new story ideas and writing for both print and web. Interns receive substantial published clips in each issue. 

Requirements

  • We give preference to journalism students with a demonstrated interest in design. Candidates must have strong writing, grammatical, and organizational skills in addition to the ability to perform in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment. Must be an enrolled student receiving course credit to apply. Internships require 15-20 hours per week and typically last four months, though dates are flexible.
