California Home+Design celebrates the best of design throughout the state along with the artisans, designers and fabricators behind the finished product. We do so through our magazine, our website, and the popular and diverse events that we host up and down the Golden State. This past fall, we are added yet another dimension to California Home+Design with Small Space Big Style: CH+D’s premiere Showhouse.

At CH+D we know that the greatest luxury isn’t always square footage, it’s inspired design. CH+D identified the Hollywood Condos as the perfect canvas for the work of a handful of California’s most talented designers. They transformed a stunning 3-bedroom, 1,400-square-foot penthouse in the heart of Hollywood into a breathtaking space that embodied the California Home+Design vision. Part concept house, part decorator showcase, the space will exhibit innovative, custom designs by today’s most forward-thinking designers that will undoubtedly inspire all who walk through the doors to think differently about design and how we live today.

I agree that the definition of small is relative, but regardless of your opinion on what square footage qualifies, the configuration of the Hollywood Condo residences are definitely designed to maximize space, which is what we at CH+D are here to highlight. 1,400 sq. ft. may be roomy for a one bedroom, but each 1,400-square foot unit has two bedrooms, plus an office, four bathrooms and two outdoor spaces, not to mention a kitchen with top of the line appliances, and a dining and living room. I have to agree with anonymous. Smart design is great, but 1400 ft2 as a small space is accepting suburban house bloat as the de facto norm. 1400 ft2 should be able to house a family of 3 or 4 comfortably. How about "Medium Space". It's not as sexy, but it would stop all the people who love design and live in real small spaces where design good design is much more of a necessity from being disappointed when they see medium/large defined as small.

I remember reading that Trulia had done a survey and found the average size of a home was 2,100? But, regardless whether you find 1,400 sf small or not, and it is a relative thing, each designer will be given just a room or two to design, and showing off small space ideas in their individual rooms.

Need to agree with many of the posts here already, small as defined by 1,400 sf2 is not only silly but short sighted in the current economy. What is the carbon footprint of this "small" space? Better to focus on 800 sf2 and under to really challenge designers to prove how creative a small space can be.....
The current design showcase is merely a grandstand for a small cadre of designers not based on reality.

A friend came in from out of town and we visited the showcase yesterday - as a space planner and cabinetry designer for a large corporation, I give a MAJOR hats off to this collective of ideas - I was especially loving the niche areas - a very small reach-in closet became a great office done in teal enamel from top to bottom, and having great function as well as aesthetic. The bifold doors had a slight padding with a melon colored fabric covering and twin rows of metal studs defining the door fronts. Wonderful, wonderful. My favorite moment was climbing the stairs (handrail = bright magenta metal)and seeing the sewing niche in the loft -French wallpaper in a magenta "scribble" that is to die for and the perfect spot for a sewing machine and threads and fabrics all in easy reach. I wanted to sit down and design a modern quilt right then and there. Then turning around, an outdoor space that framed the LA city views that said "sit and have gin and tonic on ice right now." It was a complete WOW for both my friend and I. We stayed for the entire one hour reservation just enjoying all the details that were threaded together for a great home style. Thank you designers and C H + D for this lovely production.
